A Nursing Mom’s ‘NO’vember

(U.S. Breastfeeding Committee)

I have been seeing two different themes emerging online for November: gratitude and saying “no.” Catholics can also add: remembering those who have died and directing our thoughts to heaven.

First, as Catholics let’s remember that our eternal home is heaven. Although motherhood can be challenging at times, it is helping you become more like Christ. Jesus loves both you and your baby very much, and He can’t wait to see you in heaven!

Secondly, let’s remember all that we are grateful for. If you are a nursing mom, your baby is here! Even if you are supplementing due to low milk supply, you are still a nursing mom! Both of those are huge gifts! Look for the little gifts, too, such as your baby’s sweet smiles and giggles, that special rocking chair you love to sit in while nursing your baby, and the warm snuggles you share.

Thirdly, let’s focus on what we can say “no” to this month. It is okay to say “no” to hosting Thanksgiving dinner at your house if you have a new baby! If your older child’s school is asking for volunteers for the upcoming fundraiser and you just do not have the energy right now to help, it is okay to say “no.” If your husband’s work is hosting a holiday dinner at someone’s house and children are not invited, it is okay to say “no” so you will not have to separate from your baby. Focus on what is most important to you and what you have the energy for.
