Fathers and the Breastfed Baby
Fathers have a unique role in the breastfeeding relationship. They may not physically nurse the baby, but their contribution is very valuable nonetheless. They support the new mother by making sure she is well nourished and hydrated. Fathers can help the mom get situated and comfortable for breastfeeding. Dads can change diapers, do skin to skin with the baby, burp the baby, rock the baby, and bathe the baby. If the new mom is having trouble with latching the baby, the dad can possibly help her improve the latch or call the lactation consultant for her. He can hold the baby while she sleeps and showers. The father helps the mothers emotionally by listening and encouraging her in breastfeeding and mothering. Dads can prepare meals, grocery shop, and help with other necessary household chores. Fathers can also help their wives spiritually by praying with them and for them. Maybe he can even arrange a Eucharistic minister to come to the house once a week until the new mom is able to attend Mass again.
Think about what a great role model St. Joseph was. Even though he was an “ordinary” husband and father, he is considered one of the greatest saints. He grew in holiness through protecting and loving Jesus and Mary.
